A lot more than genetics have a role in making your skin dry. Luckily, contributing factors such as cold weather, dry climates, wind and sun exposure, excessive swimming, menopause, the use of drying alkaline soaps, diet, smoking, and continuous exposure to certain chemicals are preventable. However, it starts with 1) having a consistent basic skin care regimen, 2) getting into the habit of exfoliation, and 3) staying hydrated.

  1. 1)A basic skin care regimen consists of three steps i) cleansing, ii) toning, iii) treatment and moisturizing. You will get the best results by being consistent every day in the morning and the evening. If you don’t have time or are too tired to cleanse your skin at night, before you put toothpaste on your toothbrush, put cleanser on your face. Brush your teeth and then you’ll have to take the cleanser off.

  2. 2)Your skin regenerates itself every 28 days and as we age, the regeneration process slows down and dead cells build up making your skin even drier producing a sandpaper texture. Sloughing off these dead cells will brighten your dull complexion, stimulate circulation, and leave your skin cells well nourished and healthy. Don’t think that avoiding exfoliation will help to pamper and protect your skin. Unfortunately, not doing so makes the problem worse.

  3. 3)We understand that drinking enough water (minimum of eight 8-ounce glasses) can sometimes seem like a daunting task day in and day out. However, know that your outer skin is kept moisturized by both water at the surface (and internally on the cellular level) as well as sebum from your oil glands. So if your sebaceous (oil) glands are not producing enough oil to keep the outer skin moist, then improving your skin’s moisture and elasticity will have to come from being hydrated.
